As the founder of Sonkar Export, I’ve always believed that true quality starts at the source. That’s why I traveled to South India’s coir belt—Kerala and Tamil Nadu—to meet the people, see the process, and understand the story behind each product we export.
Here’s what I learned.
🌴 Step 1: Where It All Begins – The Coconut Husk
The process starts at farms and collection centers, where coconut husks are gathered, dried, or soaked. These husks are rich in coir fiber and pith, the two key components of our export products.
🧵 Step 2: Fiber Extraction in Action
In the factories, I witnessed semi-automatic and manual machines extracting coarse fiber from the husks. It’s a blend of craft and engineering—mostly operated by skilled women workers.
The separated fiber goes into mats, ropes, and geo-textiles. The leftover pith? That becomes coco peat, our core product.
🌱 Step 3: Coco Peat Processing
In high-tech units, I saw how coco peat is:
Dried mechanically
Screened to remove dust
Compressed into blocks, bricks, or grow bags
Tested for EC and pH to meet export standards
Every batch is tagged, documented, and checked thoroughly.
📦 Step 4: Quality Control and Packaging
Moisture levels, block weight, and cleanliness are monitored closely. The packaging team wraps and labels each shipment—whether it’s a 650g brick or a 25 kg bale—with accuracy and care.
🤝 Step 5: Building Trust with Suppliers
More than the machines or material, what touched me most was the passion and hospitality of the factory owners. Many have been in this industry for decades.
These aren’t just suppliers—they’re partners in our mission to deliver high-quality, sustainable coir products to the world.
🌍 Final Thoughts
This trip changed how I see our business. Every grow bag, every block of coco peat has a story. At Sonkar Export, we honor that story—by staying honest, staying connected, and staying committed to quality.
